What is it?
MapASet is a tool to map a single set of geotagged photos on flickr using google maps.
Why did you build it?
Flickr is a great photography community and has a lot of features. Unfortunately, they lack a way of mapping a single set of your geotagged photos.
I wanted a way of displaying a map on my blog for a vacation I was going on so I built this tool.
What can I do with it?
Use your imagination! Below are some examples of how it's been used:
- Create a map of your vacation before you leave, put it up on your blog and each time you upload pictures they will magically appear on the map. No need to blog where you were each day to conserve our precious bits and bytes!
- A Botanical Garden on the other side of the pond (Europe) used it for their company website to show where the plants are in the garden.
- Someone went on a motorcyle trip and allowed people to keep track of his progress from his website.
- A city has used it to map landmarks around their city.
- The Pope uses it when he goes on a speaking tour. (just kidding)
Cool, Got an example?
Of course! Here is an example of a trip I took to Maui:
How can I post it on my blog or website?
After you go through the wizard to create a new map, you will be supplied with a link to your custom map. You can put that on your blog or website using an iframe; you will even be given the html source to copy and paste to your website.
Since your are posting a link back to the customized map on this site, it's dynamically create each time someone goes to the page. This means that as soon as you add a geotagged picture to the set it will appear on your map!
For the map above, I copied and pasted the following:
<iframe src="http://mapaset.4bcj.com/mapmyset.aspx?lat=20.7894983685425&long=-156.334075927734&sid=72157607206089431&z=10&h=400&w=533" width="553" height="620" frameborder="0" style="overflow: hidden; margin-left: 83px;"></iframe>
What is this Geotagging you speak of?
Geotagging adds your latitude and longitude (and sometimes heading) to the hidden data in your pictures. Read the
Geotagging Wiki on Wikipedia for more information.
How do I add a geotag to my picture?
There are a number of ways to add the data to your pictures. The easiest and most expensive way is to buy a GPS unit that plugs in to your camera. It will write the data directly to the image as you take it.
If your phone doesn't support it, there are some cool units you carry in your backpack. After you are done shooting, you put your memory card in it and it will write the GPS data for everyone your took the pictures; it syncs the pictures with the location based on the timestamp of the picture.
There is also software (commercial and free) that you install on your computer that allow you to drag drop the pictures on a map; it then writes the coordinates to the file. All of these will write to the EXIF data that flickr will read as soon as you upload it. The last option is to upload a photo to flickr and click "map it" it's free and easy.
What's this tool going to cost me?
Nothing!
What do you mean by "Nothing!"
I mean it won't cost you anything. The map doesn't have a link back to my site and there are no ads. I don't make a penny off of this tool. It's my way of keeping good karma. If you want to give me credit, I'll take it! Just send them back to this site.
If you feel inclined to help cover my hosting costs, I will accept beer money from the paypal link below:
Who are you mapping man?
I'm
Brett Jones.
I rant and
I take pictures. On rare occasions, I write code.
Sounds good! How can I get started?
Go to the
MapASet Wizard and start building your map.
